Turning waste into want is the idea behind Looptworks, a clever new company out of Portland that makes products from 100% pre-consumer industrial excess. These are top quality materials left over at the end of a production run that would otherwise be discarded. According to their statistics, a typical factory discards about 60,000 pounds of waste a week. Wow. Looptworks set out to conserve our limited resources by using what already exists to make their products. The result is unique, high quality, limited-edition upcycled items. Short of purchasing everything second hand, this concept makes more sense for the environment than so many other eco-friendly endeavors. I like the way they think!

Good Things Boutique is currently carrying Looptworks laptop and iPad sleeves made from nylon neoprene that they salvaged from a wetsuit factory, 100% cotton t-shirts for men and women that have cool conservation minded prints, as well as an awesome shorts style for men and a cute sporty dress for the ladies. New Fall Shoe Styles from Simple

We have cute fall sneakers in store from Simple, just in time for back-to-school. There are three new styles for women, stocked in size 6 through 9.5. The Take-on Ribbon style is made from eco-certified suede with a biodegradable insole and recycled PET grosgrain ribbon laces. This style also comes with a second pair of certified organic cotton laces if you happen to get tired of the ribbons. The D-Kay style is made of eco-certified suede with a biodegradable midsole and outsole and certified organic cotton laces. The Satire Flat Elastic style is made of a jute and certified organic cotton blend with a biodegradable insole. With the use of elastic instead of laces, these comfy vegan sneakers can just slip on.

We also have a new men’s style in store from the Bio-D collection. The D-Solve is made of certified organic cotton with a biodegradable midsole and outsole. This lightweight shoe is currently stocked in size 9.5-11.5. *Please ask us about special orders if you need a size we don’t currently have in stock.

These cute new summer sandals from Simple Shoes are made from eco-certified leather. Are you wondering what that means? It means the factories that make them are certified with a BLC or ISO 14001 certificate. And what does that really mean? Well, BLC standards are specific for leather tanneries’ environmental management. ISO 14001 standards are general environmental standards. What it means to me is responsible manufacturing for shoes made from leather.

What else is good about them? They are very comfortable and super cute!

I am also really excited about the new flip flops Simple came out with this season. They are made to last, but not long enough to fill up the landfills for nearly 1000 years. The reason for this is the proprietary organic compound called EcoPure that Simple mixes in with the rubber they use to make the soles of these flip flops. It actually contains millions of tiny microbes that embed themselves in the molecular structure of the rubber. Eventually, after about 20 years in specific landfill conditions, the EcoPure breaks down the material and actually turns the outsoles into dirt. Don’t worry, it is not going to happen until way after you are finished wearing them. It is a very innovative way to make shoes, but the best part is that they are some of the most comfortable flip flops you can buy. That’s pretty important if you wear them almost every day during the summer, as you will definitely want to!

Bella Vita’s Spring Jewelry Show this Weekend!

Good Things Boutique is hosting a spring show for Bella Vita Jewelry this Saturday, April 3rd, from 9:30-4:00. This will be our third time to partner with Bella Vita and I couldn’t be more excited. Brandy Thomason has been hard at work piecing together amazing combinations from her travels and her vast collection. But really, please don’t take my word for it, you must stop by to see them for yourself. With such a wide range of looks, there is always something in her line that appeals to each individual’s sense of style. The best part is, they are priced reasonably so that you don’t need a special occasion to treat yourself to something fabulous. The problem will be choosing which one!

Stop by anytime during the day to browse the full show, but I recommend coming early. Brandy will be giving away a piece of her gorgeous jewelry around 2:00 and you will surely want to get there in time to have your name entered in the drawing!

Simples Shoes that are Perfect for Spring

The Tiptoe by Simple Shoes is the perfect response to my need for comfortable and cute spring flats. The upper is all organic cotton and they come in a cute mosaic print. We have them in two combos - Black/Natural and Green/Natural. The inside is lined with a soft organic cotton jersey and has recycled carpet padding to put a little extra “spring” in your step. The sole is made from 40% recycled tires and 60% natural rubber. You’ll be sure to keep your stride right wearing these clever little flats.

Good Things Boutique also received the Teetoe sandal in Black and Natural. This popular style sold out too quickly last year and now it is back in two color choices. Made of organic cotton eyelet uppers with crepe rubber bottoms and recycled tire soles, these will be a smart addition to your wardrobe this season. I’m really excited about all the new jewelry we now have in from Kim Witter and Juli odum. These are two of my favorite local artists because they have such a diverse range with vast collections of unique pieces. For example, Juli’s flirty rosette choker, made from hand carved magnasite and paired with jet black for more drama. Or Kim’s vintage glass and pearl necklace on a dainty chain makes a very elegant pairing.
