Why You Should Be Washing Your Face With Oil.

Washing With Oil?

I agree that it sounds a little strange at first, especially if you are someone with oily skin and prone to break outs, like me. However, with just a little bit of research, it is clear that the oil cleansing craze is gaining momentum for a reason. It works. In general terms, using an oil based cleanser as the first step in your skincare routine will gently remove impurities from pores without drying out skin.

Why Does It Work?

Pores get clogged with dirt and contaminants. Soap-based cleansers break down oils, but can potentially push some of the dirt further into the pores. They also often have other ingredients that dry skin out, which can cause an overproduction of oils on the face to compensate for this. The goal is to have clean, balanced skin that stays moisturized and not overly dry.  Oil attracts oil, so it will mix with the dirt-laden oil in pores to gently lift away the impurities, while maintaining the moisture balance of the skin.

How To Get Started?

There are many combinations of ingredients that can be used to oil cleanse your face ranging from extremely simple to more specifically tailored toward individual skin issues. I would say there are about as many formula combinations available as there are skin types. I am not an aesthetician and do not intend to predict what will work for your particular skin type. I try not to give specific advise for this very reason. Personally, I have been using one I really love, made locally by Jaxon Marz, for the past 6 months and it is working well for my combination skin. You can see my results below in the before and after photo.

In researching this method, I came across many blog posts with recipe suggestions you can follow if you would like to try your hand at making your own blend. Perhaps you enjoy DIY projects and have a specific skin issue you want to tackle through your own research and development.

For those of you who don't have the time or inclination for that, Tara Lewis, founder of Jaxon Marz Goods, makes two simple and effective varieties to choose from, right here in Fayetteville, AR. One is made with rosemary and lemon essential oils and another with lavender and tea tree essential oils. A quick google search reveals all the beneficial properties of these essential oils, including (but not limited to) anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, improved circulation, antiseptic, PH- balancing, and anti-microbial.

Before and After Oil Cleansing Method

I boldly posted this before and after photo to share my results. As you can see, my skin is still not perfect, but it is not nearly as patchy or red as it was 6 months ago. I am also not breaking out as much as I used to.

I love personal testimonies! If you have experience with oil cleansing, I would love to hear your comments and suggestions below.
